Operation Double J
On June 6, 2011, two families, that work in the law enforcement field here in Dickson County, lost a loved one in a tragic shooting. Left behind were two small children, one from each family, without a father. Local Groups in the community are assisting these families with support, both spirituality and financially. Amateur Radio Operators (hams) in the area also want to assist.
On the weekend on June 25 and 26, 2011, ham radio operators all over North America will be participating in an Emergency Communications Drill called Field Day. Field Day is a 24-hour test of ham’s skills, that, go out into the “Field”, set-up radio stations in less that optimum conditions using home-built antennas, alternate power sources, and make as many contacts with other hams as possible in the time frame mentioned.
A point value is assigned to each contact made. After the exercise is over, a final score is tallied after all contacts are verified and duplicates removed. Here is how the local hams teams in the area are wanting to help.
At this time, sponsors are being sought that will donate funds based on the amount of points the locals hams earn during Field Day. Here are a few options that can be considered by those wishing to help.
Option One: One Penny per each point scored. Last year’s total was around 4800 points, so that would total 48 dollars. But, the hams here are geared up to tally a bunch more. Remember, we will not know the final score to after the exercise is over, but a score between 5000 and 6000 points is a good starting place.
Option Two: A one-time donation of any amount. You choose. All donations to the fund, no matter the size, are greatly appreciated.
Option Three: Large groups that have many co-workers, members, or employees, may want to pool their resources and offer a little more, say two, three cents a point. This is at the discretion of your team leader or organizer.
Let be known that Ham operators are expressly forbidden, by the FCC, to except any type of monetary support. All proceeds, 100 %, will go the families mentioned, split 50-50. The local hams here will not receive any compensation, of any type, for this fundraiser.
