Call for Recipes

I'm requesting a 9-1-1 Cares activation for my 21 year old daughter Brandi Moder. Brandi is a Type 1 diabetic who has had several health issues for the last five years but two years ago she developed life threatening complications.

In 2009, Brandi went into adrenal failure as a result of injections she received in her spine for Degenerative Disk Disease. As a result of her adrenal failure Brandi's body has become resistant to injectable insulin, which as we all know is necessary for survival in a Type 1 diabetic. Brandi now takes between 250-300 units of insulin a day yet her blood sugars are still so high that she frequently goes into diabetic ketoacidosis and must be hospitalized in the intensive care unit.

Due to her uncontrollable diabetes she has developed several autonomic neurapathies which affect her heart, intestines and bladder. For the last two years Brandi has needed to be hospitalized every 2-3 months. Any stress on her body can trigger an adrenal crisis which is always considered life threatening.

Two hospitalizations ago Brandi was told she needed to get her affairs in order, especially in regards to naming a guardian for her 3 year old daughter and which heroic measures she wanted taken with life support. During her last hospitalization (in August) we were told she needed a pancreas transplant to survive.

Brandi's health care cost have been astronomical and a great stress on our family. We recently discovered our health insurance will not cover the cost of either an islet cell or pancreas transplant.

We are still in the early stages of the transplant process but felt we would be remiss if we didn't start fundraising for the impending expenses.

We are creating a digital cookbook to sell but still need several hundred more recipes before it can be completed. I would greatly appreciate you telling you group members Brandi's story and seeing if they would be willing to contribute their favorite recipes for Brandi's cookbook. All recipes can be emailed to tmoder762@gmail.com please advise them to put RECIPES in the subject line.

Also, if people would be kind enough to visit Brandi's Caring Bridge website and leave messages of support for her. While there they can read Brandi's story (there's so much more than I mentioned in this email), and see what a brave young woman she is.
