Update on Marissa Monroe
Daughter of St. Joseph MI Dispatcher

I would like to give 911 Cares and update on Marissa and our family.  Marissa has stage IV Neuroblastoma and was no evidence of disease until October 19,2007 when we found out that she had relapsed.  She has since had full skull radiation and has had 6 rounds of lower dose chemo.  We are still in treatment.  We live in Michigan but her primary doctor's are in NYC at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.  Marissa is 2 1/2 years old now and is a very happy little girl who loves her big sister Makenzie.

911 Cares has provided a lot of support for us and we'd like to say thank you.  As some of you may know, I was fired from my job as a 911 dispatcher on October 1, 2007 while Marissa was in an emergency surgery in NYC to have her infected port removed.  I was fired due to time off of work to be with Marissa.  I had many supporters, including my co workers that wanted administration to keep my job.  Unfortunately administration was not supportive.  I really miss my job as a dispatcher and hopefully I will be able to return to that line of work soon.

Through 911 Cares we've also had the opportunity to meet (through emails) another dispatcher from out West.  She took a vow to help raise money to help fund a cure for Neuroblastoma, which currently has no known cure.  This month she held a fundraiser and raised $40,000 that was given to the non profit organization called BandofParents.org, which we are involved with.  This foundation raises money for research and treatment specifically for
Neuroblastoma.  Again, we would like to say thank you for all of your support.  Marissa's story can be followed at www.caringbridge.org/visit/marissamonroe

Thanks,

Tracy Monroe
