Red River Regional Dispatch
Kyle Marple's Tragic Accident

Kevin:

I am emailing you to ask everyone for their prayers and thoughts through a 911 Cares Activation as our center is trying to cope with the tragic accident to one of our own.

One of our dispatchers, Kyle Marple, suffered a tragic skydiving accident yesterday 4/19/08.  Kyle is a professional skydiving instructor with logging over 2000 jumps.

It was one of the first beautiful spring days we have had with low winds and temps in the 60’s.  He was excited to get back in the sky after a long North Dakota winter.  He had been talking about it for weeks and couldn’t wait until he finally had some time off.  Our center has been short staffed for quite some time and Kyle was always wonderful about taking overtime and working for others but was finally getting a day to himself.  Due to some fluke on the landing, the wind caught his parachute wrong and he plummeted the remainder of the way to the ground.  Instead of landing on his feet like the last 2000 jumps, he landed on his head.

Kyle suffered extreme damage to the base of the neck and the right side of his head.  The doctors had to operate to relieve the pressure on the brain as well as remove a large blood clot.  His family has made the tough decision to remove life support tomorrow.

He has been a 911 operator for over a year and has brought lots of life and laughter to our center.  He just took the Train the Trainer classes to become a trainer and was looking forward to the challenge.  He loved his job, loved dealing with the different problems and concerns that come our way on a daily basis and made sure he took the time to be a friend to everyone.
