Redwood City, CA
We just wanted to give a quick Ike and Gustav update for all of you that have been following this story. It is a story of “bad timing” for the Galveston region. They have horrible losses in the area but their story is being overshadowed by the financial crisis and the election. 911 CARES had a conference call with Texas NENA and the affected Counties from Ike. Did you know that 22 dispatchers lost EVERYTHING? They lost their home and the contents. There are at least 28 additional dispatchers that lost a good portion of their homes or belongings. Most of these dispatchers were heroically in “lock down” at their various 9-1-1 centers providing services and support to their community and their responders. We are currently working with Texas NENA and the various 9-1-1 centers to coordinate a “holiday adoption” program for these 50 families. We are also helping with fund-raising for the families and appreciation events. SPECIAL NOTE: If you haven’t mailed or shipped your clothes or toiletries, we are asking that you do it soon. We will temporarily “close” our marshalling point in Houston, Texas as of October 20th. The immediate needs have been filled and we will now turn our attention to the re-building process. Financial assistance is still being accepted via the Texas NENA chapter. Last, we want to thank the MANY generous individuals, dispatch centers, NENA Chapters and APCO Chapters that have jumped in to help their brothers and sisters. Examples include Indiana NENA that went on a shopping spree and sent their new items to Texas. A PSTC class in Illinois took up a collection and we were able to get 8 huge moving boxes of goods to Galveston almost immediately. The photo here shows the efforts of Westchester County, NY Dispatchers. We’d also like to thank Positron, National NENA and the hard working volunteers with TX-TERT, Texas NENA and Harris County 9-1-1 that have joined an amazing team of 9-1-1 volunteers that have delivered your donations. They put the heart in 911 CARES! Thanks to all of your generosity, we are making a difference! Kevin and the team at 911 CARES Return to Top 9-1-1 CARES
