Redwood City, CA Breast Cancer Battle for Robyn Goldblatt Updated 12-12-2003 **911 CARES Note** Robyn was first brought to our attention by a fellow dispatcher. Recently, when we heard Robyn's battle was even more difficult and now a financial burden, we asked for her to write her story from the beginning. Here is that e-mail: I began working for Kissimmee PD in 2/95 as a telecommunicator. I loved it there and as everyone knows, once it's in your blood, it's there for good :-) I had already been an EMT and volunteer firefighter and very involved with CISM. For a variety of reasons, the city manager had me transferred to the records dept in Jan. 2000, where I continued to do good work. In Nov. of 2000, the then Sgt., now he is a Lt., asked me if I would transfer to work for him in the Crime Lab as an Evidence Technician Clerk. My work record with him has been excellent. In April 2001, I had my 1st bout w/breast cancer. They did a lumpectomy and removed 11 lymph nodes on the right side. I went through chemo and radiation as well, using all my sick time, comp time, and vacation, and then being blessed to have received time donated from city employees. I started back to work and really pushed myself to get back to full time a little harder and faster then I should have, but when you care about the officers and firefighters you work with, and they are your extended family, well, you know the feeling :-) In Aug. 2003, the check up showed something wrong. A battery of tests told the story. The cancer was back and even more aggressive. A bilateral mastectomy was done on Sept. 16th, 2003 . I am extremely grateful that I had changed oncologists back in Feb. and am now under the care of M.D.Anderson. The doc looked at every option before choosing a very aggressive plan of attack. I now go to MD Anderson very 21 days (the 1st was 12/2,3,& 4, they had to keep me an extra night) for overnight in hospital chemo. My mom flies from N.J. the night before and stays w/me for 5 days, another blessing in my life. I have 3 more in hospital stays to go, then 12 once a week out patient chemo. My family medical leave expires 12/15 and the city manager is not extending it, instead granting me a 6 month medical leave, under which there is no guarantee my job will be held or that they have to place me somewhere else. He is allowing me to receive time donations, but I must pay all my own insurances. I don't know how much longer there are time donations for me. And I am reasonably sure the Chief will find a place for me when I can go back, maybe even back in communications. **911 CARES Note – Robyn could always use a financial donation and every card of support is a huge boost.
